Quick milk hormone test
Researchers at Wageningen research institute Rikilt have developed a rapid test for somatotropin (bST). This growth hormone, which increases milk production in cows, is forbidden in the EU but is easy to get hold of outside Europe.
The test can help the authorities to safeguard consumers from bST milk. The rapid test is meant for examining injection preparations found by inspectors.
Research leader Dr Michel Nielen: 'You can do the test using commercially available equipment. All we have done is to modify the chip with a biosensor and developed antibodies.
The most important advantage of the new test is that it is quick and cheap.
Rikilt has published the test in Analytica Chimica Acta.
