Chilled food transport for half the price

New technology developed in Wageningen means cargo ships of the Maersk Line, one of the world's largest shipping companies, will emit 350,000 tons less carbon dioxide. Carrier Transicold, a manufacturer of refrigeration equipment, will introduce new software on to the market in December, which will reduce energy requirements for chilling fruit and vegetables by half.

The software, the name of which has not yet been released, is based on research done at the Wageningen Agrotechnology and Food Sciences Group (AFSG) on optimal storage conditions for fruit and vegetables in sea containers.

'The research indicated that refrigeration systems chill more than is necessary,' says Janneke de Kramer of AFSG. 'The current systems only record the air temperature, but the temperature in the boxes that the products are stored in is more important. If you take that into account, you can save energy.'

The Wageningen research was part of the Quest project: Quality and Energy Efficiency in Storage and Transport of Agro-Materials. Carrier Transicold used the information from the research to develop software that Maersk Line tested in its shipping containers.
